The Powder Coating Process

Preparation
When preparing a substrate for coating, we need to remember the most important thing. Proper preparation! In order for the powder coating to adhere properly to the substrate and have the desired finish that you want, the preparation process is the most important. The first step is to remove all rust, mill and dirt.

Sandblasting
To remove the rust, mill and dirt we use a mechanical method of sandblasting or tumble blasting to do it. Larger items are sandblasted clean while smaller items are put into a contained tumble blaster where they are tumbled slowly while steel shot cleans them up. In addition to cleaning the substrate sandblasting ruffs up the surface just enough for the coating to adhere to it properly but not too much so the finish will be nice and smooth.

Final Preparation
After the item has been sandblasted and hung up for coating, it goes through its final stages of preparation. First it is air blown so it is dust and dirt free. Then we have an optional automatic chemical rinse system to do one final cleaning and also to promote adhesion. We also offer a pre-coat sealer to give it the optimal adhesion.

Primer Coat (1st coat)
The primer coat or under coat is the first coat of the coating cycle. We operate a manual coating system to ensure that we get in all the cracks and crevices so your product won't rust. The primer is a new Zinc Rich Primer to ensure top quality adhesion, maximum corrosion protection and a long rust free life.

Top Coat (2nd coat)
The top coat is applied very much the same way the primer coat is applied. Giving the product the look that you were expecting. After it is fully coated the product is slid on a rack into a large propane heated oven where it bakes for 15 minutes at 400o Fahrenheit. When it comes out of the oven it has the beautiful glossy finish of a newly powder coated product.

Packaging
After the item has cooled off fully it is then taken down from off the racks and either packaged onto pallets, boxed up or  wrapped in foam and shrink wrapped. It is now ready to be picked up or dropped off.
